ZHIRKOV: 2010 FA CUP FINAL REVIEWED

Russian star Yuri Zhirkov was an unused substitute as his Chelsea side beat Portsmouth in the 2010 FA Cup final to win the 2009/10 FA Cup. Yuri Zhirkov and Chelsea were able to add the FA Cup title to their Premier League title for a fantastic double at the end of the 2009/10 season.

In the 2010 FA Cup final, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti opted for Englishman Ashley Cole as his left-back ahead of Yuri Zhirkov. Russian star Zhirkov had played second fiddle to Cole in the left-back department since his arrival from CSKA Moscow in the Russian top flight. Zhirkov rarely got the chance to start games whenever Cole is fit especially in the Premier League.

Italian tactician Ancelotti went for Serbian star BranislavIvanovic as his right-back, while skipper John Terry and Brazilian player Alex started as the two centre backs in front of Petr Cech in goal. For his midfield, Ancelotti opted for the trio of Frenchman FlorentMalouda, German star Michael Ballack and Englishman Frank Lampard. In attack, Ivorian football icon Didier Drogba started as the lone central striker, while fellow striker Nicholas Anelka started on the right side of attack. For Ivorian star Salomon Kalou, he started in attack alongside compatriot Drogba and Frenchman Anelka. Kalouwas played on the right side of the Chelsea attack.

After a goalless situation in the first half, the 2010 FA Cup final came to live when Chelsea shot stopper Cechsaved the spot kick from Ghanaian midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng nine minutes into the second half. Four minutes later, Drogba gave Chelsea the lead from a free-kick and it turned out to be the only goal of the game. His goal went on to ensure that the Blues won the FA Cup to add to the Premier League in 2010.
