ZHIRKOV: 2005 UEFA CUP FINAL REVIEWED

Russian defender Yuri Zhirkov was amongst the goals as CSKA Moscow beat Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon in the 2005 UEFA Cup final. Yuri Zhirkovscored one of the goals as CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup by beating home team Sporting Lisbon 3-1 in the final. The Russians came from behind to beat their Portuguese opponents thanks to three goals in the second half.


In the 2005 UEFA Cup final at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon, Yuri Zhirkov started on the left side of defence forCSKA Moscow, while VasiliBeretzuski in front of goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev. Alexei Beretzuksi and Sergei Ignashevich were the central defenders for the Russians.ChidiOdiah, EgveniAldonin, Daniel Carvalho and ElvirRahimic were the midfielders, while Ivica Olic and Vagner Love started in attack.

Liedson and Ricardo Sa Pinto started in the Sporting Lisbon attack for the 2005 UEFA Cup final, while Fabio Rochemback, Joao Moutinho, Rogerio and Pedro Barbosa were the midfielders.Joseph Enakarhire,Beto, Miguel Garcia and Rodrigo Tello started in the Sporting defence in front of Ricardo in goal.

Sporting Lisbon established a lead at the end of the first half, but they were unable to preserve the lead until the end of the game. They had a first half lead courtesy the goal from Rogerio on 29 minutes. CSKA Moscow overturned the deficit in the second half to win the game against Lisbon and secure a first European title. Alexei Beretzuski started the fightback eleven minutes into the second half before Yuri Zhirkovadded the second CSKA Moscow goal nine minutes later. The Russians took the lead for the first time in the game with the goal from Zhirkov.Brazilian striker Vagner Love sealed the comeback win for CSKA Moscow with the third goal for the Russians on 75 minutes.
