On This Day: Zhirkov Leaves Chelsea For Anzhi Makhachkala

Every club has one time or another, made one or even more transfers that would eventually turn sour and the player would not live up to the hype that would have probably surrounded him before sealing the switch. For Chelsea, one of those transfers is Russian star Yuri Zhirkov who was signed from Russian Premier League side CSKA Moscow back in the summer transfer window of 2009.

Zhirkov arrived at Chelsea with a statement of intent and even brought about some excitement within the Blues fan base, making them invest a lot of hopes in him to perform beyond, or at least, up to expectations. He left Russia and moved to the England Premier League in a deal reported to be in the region of £13 million, but was unable to make a reasonable impact at Stamford Bridge.
